Rodent SCIDS MD's Breeder Formula - Sterile
Sulfamethoxazole (6 mg/tab)
Trimethoprim (1 mg/tab)

Oral Dosing For Immunocompromised Rodents

A comprehensive review of how high doses of Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole negatively affect the endocrine system in mice was recently published in the October 2006 issue of Comparative Medicine titled Dose-dependant Hypothyroidism in Mice Induced by Commercial Trimethoprim-Sulfamethaxazole Rodent Feed1. Though this dose of Trimethoprim-Sulfamethaxazole has been considered an “industry standard” it has long been known to negatively affect reproduction in mice. We publish a cautionary statement in our present advertising regarding this matter.

Our mission at Bio-Serv is to stay current with the needs of the industry and the laboratory animals we serve.
We are now offering a new formulation of the SCID diet that has been formulated to contain SMZ/TMP (6 mg/1 mg).
This dose is still considered efficacious against Pneumocystis carinii but has minimal hormonal side effects.
The information for the new formulation is below. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our
Veterinarian, Karen Froberg, VMD at kfroberg@bio-serv.com.

SCID diet was developed to reduce the hazards of respiratory problems in immunocompromised mice. Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole have commonly been used to reduce the occurrences of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. The medications are combined with a nutritionally complete, grain-based bacon-flavored, chewable tablet for complete, convenient oral dosing of SCID’s and other immunocompromised rodents.

Each 5 gm bacon-flavored scored tablet contains:
6 mg Sulfamethoxazole and 1 mg Trimethoprim

Average 20 gram mouse, feed one, 5 gm tablet per day

More convenient and less risk of dehydration compared to using medicated water

Custom formulations available for different concentrations and flavors

“Cold, dry” tableting process eliminates possible drug degradation due to heat and water
